Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers

[ Thanks to Kelly McNeill for this link. ]

"As a consultant, my primary service is to recommend solutions to customers. I pride myself on my experience and ability to pick good solutions for my customers that balance cost and performance with the requirements they define. Basically, people pay me to help them pick the right tool for the right job...."

"Since becoming a consultant I always make my proposals with the hardware, software and services broken out separately to insure that the customer is aware of the true costs of a solution. The only question I usually get is about why the Linux solution can accomplish the same tasks as the Windows NT solution with about half the horsepower. It is fun explaining that fact."

"To my great personal delight, I have seen a steady decline in customers selecting solutions that include Windows NT. I am a very capable systems administrator, but when I can convince a customer to implement a Linux or Unix-based solution I can solve almost every problem on their network without leaving my office. If I implement a Windows NT solution I have to utilize some kind of third party software like VNC or pcAnywhere to achieve the same ends (via a VPN of course) and still usually have to schedule time to visit the customer site, which only costs them more money."
