"Sun Microsystems Inc.'s announcement Wednesday that it has
entered into agreements with four PC vendors to preinstall its
StarOffice 5.2 productivity applications suite isn't exactly the
second coming of Microsoft Corp.'s Office, but it's a step forward,
according to one observer."
"Frankly, it feels like more of a step forward in the
consumer marketplace than in the business marketplace," said Chris
Le Tocq, an analyst with Gartner Group Inc. in San Jose,
Calif. "Whether or not this is for business, this is an investment
from Sun in increasing StarOffice's awareness. ... But Sun has a
long way to go with StarOffice, and it has always been positioned
by Sun more as a front end for StarPortal."
"Sun said that Sony Corp., eMachines Inc. and Everex Systems
Inc. will preinstall StarOffice 5.2 on some of their desktop and
laptop computers. Gateway Inc. will preinstall StarOffice on its
desktops and notebooks for Sun customers."
