"While I was a software engineer for a major software company, I voyaged into the realm of open source software (GNU/Linux) in my spare time. As a result of my experiences in both arenas, I have become a full fledge believer in the Open Source movement. I now am an independent software developer (as of 1/1/2000) or, put another way, a technology prostitute(1). In this paper, I will relate my experiences in the Cathedral to attempt to explain why the Open Source model produces better software."
"Before I begin to relate my experiences, I want to first explain what motivated me to write this paper. I first wrote this paper while I was still employed by the "Cathedral." This paper was nothing more than a therapeutic venting session (I guess scream therapy wasn't working). I had reached a point of maximum frustration with the problems and the people that I had to deal with on a daily basis. I was tired of bitching about these problems to everyone within earshot. I was more tired of everyone agreeing with me yet nothing being done about it."
"This paper is broken up into three different parts. The first part discusses the actual source code that gets compiled to binary code. The second part compares feature sets. The last part discusses security."
