Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers

"...This wearable PC application is the culmination of the collaborative work among Bell Canada, IBM Canada Ltd. and Xybernaut Corporation. Earlier this year, IBM was contracted by Xybernaut to design, develop and manufacture the computer portion of Xybernaut's next generation of wearable computer systems. In addition to product development, IBM introduced Xybernaut to Bell Canada as part of their efforts to develop the market for wearable computing for IBM's existing customers."

"The application is being managed by Bell Canada's Mobile Communications Centre (MCC), which has provided an elite group of Bell Canada field service technicians for the application, who will be outfitted with the Mobile Assistant(R) IV (MA IV(R)) wearable PC provided by Xybernaut. Functional, lightweight and form-fitting, the MA IV(R) is a fully wireless computing and communications device that is capable of connecting the user to the Internet and providing a wireless voice connection. The MA IV can be configured in many different ways, including on a vest or a belt, and is equipped with a headset or a flat panel display for projecting and viewing images."

"For the next two months, Greater Toronto Area residents will get a rare glimpse into the future of both technology and fashion, as Bell Canada technicians use the MA IV in all weather and work conditions that a field technician typically encounters. The wearable PC combines next generation mobile computing with next generation wireless technology and enables mobile workers to perform technical functions on-the-go. Most of the approximately 5,000 Bell Canada field technicians currently use IBM Thinkpad(R) laptops to access critical data remotely. If the results of the trial application are successful, Bell Canada intends to gradually deploy the Mobile Assistant among its field technicians and explore the use of wearable computers as a delivery device for their growing base of wireless users.
