"The WTO's dispute settlement body has upheld an American complaint against Canada."

"The Americans disputed Canada's legislation that says patents filed before October 1, 1989 have a 17-year term. The Americans say that violates a WTO agreement called TRIPS, or Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property."

"The 1996 TRIPS provides patent protection for 20 years, something Canada has now been told it will have to comply with."
