Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers

"Volution runs atop Unix and Linux and provides a graphical view into all the resources and directories available across a given enterprise, says Ransom Love, CEO of Caldera, Orem, Utah. The software could be used to handle systems monitoring, software distribution and scheduling of network tasks, among other things."

"Volution is part of the company's strategy to integrate its Linux software with the Unix operating system from Santa Cruz Operation , which it moved to acquire earlier this year, Love says. The software can be used to manage other versions of Linux and Unix, not just those developed by Caldera or SCO, he says."

Although Linux runs many individual Web servers, up until now it has not offered the high-end scalability and multiprocessor capabilities necessary for service providers, Love says. "If you bring Linux and Unix together, you now have the scalability today for back-office applications," he said during a keynote address Tuesday at the Service Provider Summit."
