"One of the outcomes of Oslo was that we realized the systems business was critical for HP, so we created the LSO and empowered it with extensive research and development capabilities," [director of marketing for HP's Linux system operations, Mike] Ballmer said. Perens will provide LSO with strategic advice and direction on areas such as clustering, software development, management solutions and digital content creation."
"My goal is to increase the role of Linux across HP as well as to facilitate greater communication with the Linux and open-source development communities," he said. "I will also be working towards ensuring that whatever hardware we produce, an open-source developer will be able to write his own driver for it. If I can achieve that alone I will have accomplished something significant."
"HP on Monday also announced the appointment of long-standing Linux developer Martin Fink as general manager of the LSO. Fink has been with HP for 15 years, most recently managing research and development for the porting of Linux to HP's PA-RISC processor and support for open-source desktops GNOME and KDE on HP systems. He is also on the board of directors and acting vice president for the Open Source Development Lab."
