"...Themestream's engineers evaluated the Solaris operating system running on Sun servers. After conducting a series of price/performance comparisons, Themestream selected VA Linux solutions for its superior reliability and financial benefits. "We wanted to avoid costly licensing fees required by other vendors," said Cedeno, "with the Linux open source model, we can scale our systems at a much more economical rate."

"After adopting Linux as its operating system, Themestream immediately turned to VA Linux to supply the Linux hardware and services necessary to develop its infrastructure. Its streamlined systems and Linux expertise made VA Linux the logical choice for Themestream. "To accurately adjust our systems capacity to rises in site traffic, we decided to scale our Web site using ultra dense 2U, dual processor servers," said Cedeno, "VA's streamlined yet proportionately more powerful systems, were a perfect fit for our architecture."

"As well as considering a Solaris deployment, Themestream briefly considered using a Microsoft solution. However, maintenance, performance and cost issues quickly discouraged further investigation. Although Themestream did not run a detailed cost analysis against the Microsoft platform, they estimate that the Linux solution provided a 50% cost saving. Themestream's initial server deployment cost approximately $60,000."
