"It is almost cliche to call SuSE mammoth or huge, however; like most cliches, there is a certain amount of truth in the statement. SuSE, a German distribution, comes with more software than perhaps any other. In fact, so much that it is obvious that the company believes that choice is more than an option, its a value and necessity. SuSE Professional comes on six CD's or one DVD, with over 1500 applications, which puts it at a size comparable to some on-line file archives.
"SuSE 7.0 is the most recent offering from SuSE GmbH and comes in two flavors, Personal and Professional. Personal is the desktop edition that is aimed at the home user/office user who isn't likely to need many of the server and development tools available in its big brother the Professional Edition. This trend makes sense when you consider the different application and support needs of these different market segments. In fact, the two editions come with different support options: Personal comes with 60 days installation support via phone, e-mail, or fax, while Professional has 90 days of installation support in the same forms. Both editions have access to unlimited support via the web, as well. For our purposes we are reviewing SuSE Professional 7.0, which will provide a broader scope of what SuSE is capable of."
"SuSE was one of the first distributions to support some of the latest software available to Linux users. This means that at the time of publication, it offered the latest version available for XFree86, KDE and GNOME. Although, at the the time of this review, newer versions of these packages are now available, but there are still only a handful of distributions including these newer releases. Thus, SuSE is still in a leading position when it comes to new releases in the distribution race. In any case, you can update these packages from SuSE's web site or wait until the upcoming 7.1 release which we will be reviewing shortly."
