Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers

"Indrema CEO John Gildred met with curious enthusiasts on IRC last night to discuss the end of his company and the future of the code and hardware design originally intended for the next-generation Linux game console. Not all of the software designed for the system will be released to the open source community."

"According to Gildred, the decision was made to close shop last Friday in the face of an investor's market that couldn't provide upwards of $10 million to keep the company alive. He said the company will release the last of its employees by the end of this week."

"Of no small curiosity on the part of many watching the project was the disposition of the code developed for the platform's software development kit, called the IESDK. The kit, currently at version 0.3, was to include a variety of technologies including well-known open standards OpenAL and OpenGL in addition to a complete Linux distribution for the console (DV Linux), a game-oriented implementation of XFree86 extended to include calls to a digital rights management (DRM) layer running on the console the company dubbed XTrema, and a video streaming technology called OpenStream."
