This story by a leading media-analysis Web site questions whether slashdot can retain its independence as VA Linux goes through financial difficulties. Considering that Hemos, Taco, and their crew have done a pretty good job in retaining their independence to date under VA's ownership, we'd argue that many of the concerns laid out here are of more interest to media insiders than the Linux community.

"By casting its lot with the companies that hope to profit from open source, Slashdot was able to beef up its staff, improve the site and in those heady days, one presumes, dream of making a bit of money for its founders. In the process, however, the Web site tied itself to what has been a cratering market for Linux startups. The bigger companies were now stepping in to seize the market space -- IBM, Dell and Compaq are now major players, with IBM alone planning to spend $1 billion to promote its Linux business in 2001."

"And now, if the fears of Slashdot regulars, and some analysts, have any weight, the decision to join up with the marketplace could lead to a radically changed site, or perhaps even threaten its long-term viability. No matter how things shake out, the Slashdot story illustrates the difficulties a fiercely independent site faces once it signs away its independence."
