"Linux is on the rise among corporate IT buyers as, with great caution, thrift and care, they begin to think beyond current tough economic conditions and plan their inevitable investments in new technologies, looking for efficiency in software and in capital investment.

"'We see Linux moving to the enterprise data-centre space; emerging as the open standard offering value and performance,' says Randall Mott, chief information officer of Dell, the world's largest and most successful PC maker.

"The open-source operating system was 'a natural migration from proprietary Unix', he said during a brief visit to Melbourne. Dell watched the progress of all operating systems and believed that, for many corporate customers, 'a move to Linux provides a fairly straightforward transition and the opportunity to get about a 50 per cent decrease in their overall cost of installation...'"
