LWN.net: SOT Initiates Linux Licence Renewal

"Today, for the first time, Linux user licenses will expire and require renewal. Ten years ago, when Linux was in its infancy, no-one believed that the operating system would still be around today. For this reason, a fixed 10-year license was freely granted, with the option to extend the license simply by registering a license renewal after that time.

"'We understand that our users may find this procedure inconvenient, but we are obliged follow the strict terms of the license agreement, and this requires us to enforce the Linux license renewal. At SOT, we would like to begin the license renewal process as early as possible in order to minimize the risk of licenses expiring. We expect other Linux distributors to start granting renewals later today,' explained Mr. Santeri Kannisto, CEO, SOT..."
