"The accessory of choice at the LinuxWorld Expo used to be the pocket protector. Now it's the power tie.

"In past years, exhibitors at this annual confab of the open source software movement shifted from small startups trying to sell their own versions of the free Linux operating system to the big names in technology--Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, IBM. Even Microsoft, whose bread and butter is directly threatened by Linux, gave in and rented a booth.

"Most of those big companies sell versions of their products tweaked to work with the free operating system. But more than ever the show, which opens at the Moscone Center today, is attracting businesspeople from companies that don't sell anything related to Linux.
