"What really hasn't changed much is the competition, and the push for brand recognition. Ever since the first IBM clone, the debate over whether to buy brand name or a cheaper knock off has been burning. Words like quality, value, and reliability are tossed around and often used as weapons in the ensuing arguments for and against particular vendors.

"Then you add us Linux users to the mix and the argument takes on a whole new direction. While we're just as interested in reliability and features, we're really much more interested in performance and compatibility with our beloved OS. And I haven't met a Linux user yet who isn't a penny pincher. (Not that that is a bad thing.) So what we decided to do here was to pit two mobile units against each other in a Tux based grudge match: one brand name, one not so well known. We tested the units, played with them, carried them into meetings, dragged them through the airport, pried open a few covers, and all sorts of things that a Linux lover on the go might do with one of these handy items. Due to time constraints, we were unable to test everything we wanted to, but we did get through quite a bit..."
