Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers

Lindows.com has launched LindowsOS Laptop Edition, the first Linux-based operating system tailored specifically for laptops. LindowsOS Laptop Edition includes improved power management, high compatibility with WiFi cards, and the ability to take advantage of keyboard shortcuts to browsers and email programs.

LindowsOS Laptop Edition greatly improves power management and extends battery life with the ability to put a laptop to "sleep." Closing the laptop cover or simply selecting "Sleep" from a popup battery menu will save all work in progress and power down the laptop to minimize battery usage; pressing the power button restores the computer to its pre-sleep state.

LindowsOS Laptop Edition also features a high level of compatibility with a wide range of WiFi cards, found increasingly in businesses, schools, and other public areas. This specialized version of Desktop Linux for laptops has been designed to require only minimal configuration whenever a WiFi card is inserted, limited to two steps to switch from an Ethernet connection to a wireless.

Many newer laptop models feature "Net keys" to make accessing the web browser or email application quick and easy. LindowsOS Laptop Edition has been tailored to work seamlessly with laptops featuring these keys.

"Last year, manufacturers shipped 30.5 million laptops," said Michael Robertson, chief executive officer of Lindows.com. "That number represents nearly 25% of the worldwide PC market. LindowsOS Laptop Edition brings the benefits of Desktop Linux into this fast-growing segment, paving the way for affordable mobile computing to proliferate."

PC Club, a 54-store chain offering value-priced computer solutions, currently carries two laptop models pre-loaded with LindowsOS Laptop Edition. Available immediately in stores or through their website, model "Olympic Athena" is designed for optimum mobility, thin and lightweight at only 5.5 pounds and starting at $899; model "Olympic Spartan" features powerful computing abilities and is designed to replace desktop computers at $959.

"PC Club prides itself on being able to offer our customers the best technology at the best prices, and excellent support," said Jackson Lan, chief executive officer of PC Club. "Lindows.com is giving us the opportunity to make solid steps into offering complete, affordable, stable, and robust solutions."

LindowsOS Laptop Edition is available now from a wide range of retailers, pre-loaded on a full range of models which have been rigorously tested to ensure compatibility the factory forward.

LindowsOS Laptop Edition can also be downloaded digitally from the CNR Warehouse, at no charge for members or $49.95 for non-members. Physical versions of LindowsOS Laptop Edition can be ordered through the Lindows.com website at www.lindows.com/buy.
