"The federal government appears unlikely to endorse proposals to make open source software its preferred solution, but it is keen to promote the use of open standards, agency officials have indicated.

"Tony Judge, general manager of the business strategies branch of the National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE), told attendees at the Linux and Open Source in Government conference in Adelaide on Tuesday that the government already provided a level playing field in which software selections could be made according to value-based criteria, but added that conformance to standards was an important part of that equation..."
