"Starter Edition is a departure for Microsoft, a company that has historically resisted the notion of purposefully paring back the capabilities of its flagship operating system. The company says Starter Edition is an effort to expand the reach of computing, not an attempt to respond directly to the open-source Linux operating system, or the effects of software piracy.
