"At the end of this installation process your wifi will be
working, but the current linux kernel supplied by debian 5.0 does
not support the wifi chip on the 1000HE. So it is necessary to
install over ethernet, not wifi, then install a newer kernel that
does support wifi. If you do not have ethernet, hopefully a friend
will let you use his, or you could check into a high class hotel
with ethernet to do the install. Next year's version of debian will
support this wifi chip, but by then Asus will probably be using
another chip that will not be supported yet.
"Boot up windows and go to http://www.chrysocome.net/dd and
click on "dd-0.5.zip". A "file download" window will pop up with
alternatives to open, save or cancel. Click "save". A "save as"
window will pop up with "my documents" as the default. Click
"save". A "download complete" window pops up, click "close". Go to
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowTo/Install, go to "4.
Download installer image" and click on the .../debian-eeepc.img
link. Again save to my documents. Now close out the internet
explorer browser. Double click on the "my documents" icon on the
screen. Among the files present should be the two you just
downloaded, "dd-0-5" and "debian-eeepc.img". Notice that "dd-0-5"
has a vertical zipper shown on it, indicating that it is a zipped
file. We need to unzip it before we can use it. Double click on it.
To the left a "folder tasks" window appears. Click on "extract all
files". The extraction wizard window pops up. Click on "next".
Click on next again then finish. Then close all windows. Go into
"my documents" again. Now you will see two versions of dd-0-5, one
with and one without a zipper. Double click on the on without the
zipper. In it you will see the file "dd". Click on it to highlight
it. To the left click on "copy this file". A "copy items" window
will pop up. Click on "my documents" in the window, then on "copy"
down below. Close all windows and get back to the desktop
screen."
