Kroes Stepping Down as EU Antitrust Chief

"Her successor, though, may not bring any joy to Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) and Sun: He's a member of Spain's Socialist Party. Kroes is set to become the digital agenda commissioner for the EU, with oversight of the European Network and Information Security Agency (Enisa) and the Information Society Directorate General, which supports IT activities.

"In her new role, she will move from business regulation to increasing access to online content and the digital economy.

"Her successor as competition commissioner is Joaquín Almunia, whom the Wall Street Journal notes was a Spanish government minister in the 1980s and 1990s while his Socialist party was in power. He previously was involved in creating European economic policy, including the October 2008 bailout of Hungary."
