A Preview of Fedora 15: Rough around the edges, but worth the trouble

“Fedora 15 made some odd choices in what software it included
and what software it leaves out.

“LibreOffice is the big omission here. Given that it is the
premiere office suite for Linux, it seems odd that it would not be
installed by default. What is even more odd is how painfull it is
to install. The Office category in Add/Remove Software presents a
bewildering array of options, and searching by “libreoffice”
presents a similarly unhelpful list of options. Dropping to the
terminal and running yum groupinstall “Office/Productivity” will
install what you need, but this is not exactly something you would
expect most users know.

“Fedora 15 also makes no attempt to install those “not quite so
open source” application that everyone installs anyway, like Flash,
MP3 codecs, Java and so on. To make matters worse, most of these
packages can only be found in the RPM Fusion repo. Adding this repo
is not difficult, but more difficult than it really needs to be
when you compare it to the tick box Ubuntu gives you for installing
these kinds of applications.”
