“Our ongoing look at Linux handhelds continued on Friday with a
look at the Samsung/G.Mate Yopy. Slated for release in mid-August,
the Yopy is the first Linux-based PDA, and it packs a remarkable
amount of multi-media punch. Using the lightweight W Window system
and the associated W Toolkit, the Yopy will be open to development
by whoever cares to download the source and start hacking. A quick
visit to the Flash-heavy www.yopy.com indicates a wireless portal
service may be launched in conjunction with the handheld, but few
details are available.”
“Twenty-three Asian electronics companies joined to form EMBLIX:
the Japan Embedded Linux Consortium, a group formed around the goal
of extending Linux further as an embedded platform for consumer
development. … Some are taking the event as further evidence that
a line is being drawn against Microsoft in the looming battle for
the palms of the world. Others believe Linux will eventually
control the embedded market, even if Microsoft continues to
dominate the desktop.”
