“In an alternative universe, where antitrust trials don’t take
the better part of a decade to reach their conclusion, last week’s
announcement of federal government plans to break up the Microsoft
colossus might have been better received.”

“Imagine the pandemonium such a news item might have produced 18
or even 12 months ago. Back then, Microsoft was at the height of
its powers and the term “Linux” was little more than a fringe
buzzword to most corporate insiders. To a community still begging
for media attention, an anti-Microsoft decision would have been a
cause for huge celebration rather than the current response:
something between a collective shudder and a collective yawn.”

“Times change, and fast. Now that Linux companies are on Wall
Street and now that the Linux operating system has proven its
ability to match Windows NT stride for stride in the server OS
market and Windows CE in the embedded market, the vision of a
hobbled Microsoft seems like yet another example of regulatory
overkill.”
