CRN: More Vendors Investing Resources — Linux moving into spotlight

“From Intel Corp. to major server manufacturers, vendors are
investing more resources into optimizing hardware for the Linux
operating system.”

“We’ve been demonstrating our 64-bit processor family, and
demonstrating it with [Windows] NT-64, also with Linux,” said Craig
Barrett, chief executive of Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel, at a
recent conference with IT executives hosted by GartnerGroup Inc.,
Stamford, Conn. “We’ve had Unix-various flavors of Unix-on Intel’s
architecture for the last fifteen years,” Barrett said.”

IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., Hewlett-Packard Co., Palo Alto,
Calif., and Compaq Computer Corp., Houston, have committed to
optimizing various server platforms for Linux.
