“Personally, I could care less where people are surfing, however
I would like to know how much traffic is http Vs POP3 Vs SMTP Vs
Netbios, etc. Sometimes our database applications are dropping
connections and I’m thinking about prioritizing traffic on our
internal routers and possibly switches. I’ve found inexpensive
probes that help me answer these questions, but even the paper work
involving a $500 purchase can be more trouble than it’s worth.
Additionally, if I want to deploy 4 or more probes, it gets even
more expensive. What’s worse, I really only want to borrow the
probes. I don’t need to run them more than a month and I certainly
don’t want to bother maintaining them longer than that. I’ve go my
own surfing to do. That’s when I visit freshmeat.net…”
