standard for instant messaging is drawing the increasing ire of
corporate users and the rest of the IM community, which plans to
escalate its fight for universal access.”

“At stake is the future of the huge and still-growing IM market,
which AOL dominates with about 120 million users of its two
proprietary clients, AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and ICQ.”

“A group of smaller vendors, led by Denver-based Tribal Voice,
has sought government aid in its fight to force AOL to open its
network to users of other IM clients. Last week, Tribal Voice
indicated that it will step up its efforts.”
