“The distribution is available as 3 ISO files (and, presumably,
3-4 cd’s when it’s officially ready for sale) a Source CD, a
Install CD and a Contrib CD. We downloaded both the Install and
Contrib CD for this preview and took it for granted that the source
CD comes with the same high-quality source the Slackware folks have
always included with their distribution. After the download was
done (love that broadband!) we burned the CDs and booted our test
machine from the Install CD. The Slackware installer is classic
Slack; a text-based loader which we covered pretty thoroughly in
our previous review of Slack 7, …. well thought out and logical.
The only changes is an auto-configurator for a network card, which
scans all available cards and installs support for them where
needed. For those who want to setup the networking on their own,
this can be skipped and you can manually input everything. It’s not
forced and you can skip the dialogue if you wish. Choice is a good
thing.”
“The Contrib cd comes with XFree86 4.0 for those curious
about the new version, but will not been included with the main
distribution until the majority of the bugs have been stomped out,
along with KDE 1.91 (Kleopatra) and KOffice pre-Beta1. All
these items included on the cd are still beta material, prone to
crashing, and exhibiting odd behaviour, but show great promise in
what’s to come. We don’t suggest installing KDE 1.91 and KOffice
pre-Beta1 unless you are ready for a few rough spots while working
with them. Also included on the Contrib CD is the Afterstep,
Blackbox and Icewm windowmanagers and supporting files, gcc
compilers and the like.”
