GraphicsMuse: Blurred Vision – Gimp’s Blur Filters

“The original Gimp came with a wealth of effects filters,
and the upcoming 1.2 release will certainly follow that tradition.
Among the many features provided are the Blur filters. These
filters provide various means of blending nearby pixels. The
results vary according to the methods used, various seed values,
and even with the type of image with which you are working.”

“In this tutorial I’m going to cover each of the 7 blur filters
that will be provided with the 1.2 release. If you’ve already
started to experiment with this version you’ll have no problem
following along. If you’re still using the 1.0 version you can
still follow along – just ignore the filters which are not in your
release. The others should be essentially the same.”

“Note that all the blur filters only work on either RGB or
Grayscale images. If you want to use the blurs on Indexed images
you’ll need to convert them to RGB or Grayscale first, using the
Image->Modes options in 1.2 (or simply under the Image options
in 1.0). Most blur filters will work on a selection or a complete
layer, though in 1.2 there are exceptions which will be noted in
the discussion.”
