“Sun Microsystems plans to offer its new version of Solaris free
of charge, the company will announce today.”

“At the launch of Solaris 8 in New York, Sun will offer the
binaries and source-code for the new OS, in an apparent bid to
convince customers and vendors to support the new platform at the
expense of Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows 2000 and Linux operating
systems….”

“Now, Sun is throwing community licensing open to all users,
in a move driven by the widespread popularity of the open-source
Linux operating system.
Sun hopes to spur sales of its systems
by making it easier for vendors and users to modify the code to
suit their individual needs. The lost revenue will be trivial, and
will be made up by increased systems sales, Sun said.”
