“David Johnson’s hobby is flying, but his obsession is open
source. In true geek fashion, he merged those passions to create a
better membership management solution for the Buttonville Flying
Club, which led to money-saving options for his clients.

“Johnson is a software developer and consultant in Toronto,
Canada, who remembers when ‘just about everything was closed
source,’ back in the 1980s and ’90s. ‘When I really got into the
open source world was 10 years ago. We played around with trying to
develop applications using the browser as an interface and found it
kludgy at best.’ But then he discovered Java, he says, and ‘how
marvelous it was to be platform-independent. You didn’t have to be
buying the latest and greatest tools.’ It was then that Johnson
made a permanent switch to Linux…”
