“There is one big task you must accomplish before you
install any distribution of Linux. You must figure out your PC’s
hardware compatibility with your Linux software.
The best
thing to do here is check the hardware compatibility list (HCL) for
the distribution. Don’t believe any hype you might hear about how
wonderfully compatible your version of Linux is. Check the list
even before you even buy or download the distribution.”

“During installation, Linux distributions will typically ignore
any unrecognizable hardware device, indifferently continuing
through its installation process. As you can imagine, this can be a
problem if the device in question is your PC’s video card and you
can’t see anything on the screen.”

“How well do you really know your PC? Really know it? … Don’t
worry, you will not have to open your CPU. In fact, I strongly
recommend against this. Your Windows machine has a tool that
enables you to see into the inner mechanics of your PC.”
