“In our previous article on the subject (How Well Do Athlon (K7)
Motherboard Work with Linux?) we discussed the rumors of Linux
incompatibility with AMD Athlon (K7) motherboards and chipsets.
As is so often the case with Linux hardware compatibility
information, the evidence was inconsistent and contradictory.
Depending on whose opinion one sought, the Athlon was either the
best or the worst thing in x86 Linux. So in the article, we tried
to identify some of the main issues and asked for compatibility
reports from K7 Linux users. Thanks to these reports
contributed to LhD, we can now say with certainty that, except for
a few problems, Linux works very well on Athlon systems.”
“In general, the Athlon motherboards received high marks and
praise from most LhD users. The motherboards achieved an average
rating of 4.58 out of 5.0, and the user reports were punctuated
with statements such as, “Setup is simplicity itself”, “Rock
Solid”, “Performance is truly amazing”, and “Solid with RedHat
6.1.” The compatibility cautions sounded by RedHat, SuSE, Abit and
others seem to be largely unwarranted at this point.”
“One reason for some of the past problems with installing Linux
on K7 systems was the lack of suitable MTRR (Memory Type Range
Register) support in the default supplied kernels. This would cause
all kinds of trouble, but could be worked around by downloading a
custom bootdisk or building a custom kernel. Fortunately, this is
no longer necessary since Linux distributions now come bundled with
kernel versions that work with Athlon by default.”
