“Corel’s worse case and IBM’s trio of flavors for Netfinity
headline this week in the land of Linux distributions. Oh, and
there is that little matter of $40 million, just for a few good
(Red Hat) neighbors.”

“Most of the news this week is very business oriented, revolving
around partnering, pricing and financial filings. The Ottawa
Citizen and Computerworld reported that Corel may run out of cash
if the Inprise merger falls through. However, the report came as
part of a required SEC 10-Q filing. Inprise representatives were
noted in an InfoWorld article that the report was a worst case
scenario and that plans for the Corel/Inprise merger were
proceeding as planned. On the flip side, Forbes reported on Corel’s
plans for rebooting its core business on Linux.”

“In another partnering story, IBM announced that they would be
preinstalling three different distributions on their Intel-based
Netfinity servers: Caldera, Red Hat and TurboLinux. Caldera got the
coveted first post, but this is actually a three tier deal. “
