Linux.conf.au 2003: Call for Papers

Linux.conf.au is the annual Australian Linux technical
conference, and one of the largest gatherings of users and
developers in the Southern Hemisphere, organised by the Australian
Linux community. It is not an expo for Linux products, but an
opportunity for developers and groups to present their ideas
amongst peers, and for the Free Software and Open Source
communities to gather in general.

The 2003 conference is being held in Perth, Western Australia at
the Crawley campus of The University of Western Australia, next to
the Swan River. More information can be found on the conference

Although the majority of conference attendants are developers,
papers of more general appeal will be considered.

People interested in giving presentations have a choice of the
following formats:

• Paper Presentations (45 minutes)
• Tutorials (3 hours)
• Work in progress/poster sessions (30 minutes)
• Birds of a Feather meetings (informal)
• Panel discussions

Topics

Papers on the following topics are encouraged:

• Linux kernel
• File systems
• Databases
• Programing and scripting languages
• Networking and communications
• Productivity, Groupware
• Multimedia
• Games
• Other ‘Open Source’ projects

We are open to a broader range of papers as well, even non-Linux
based papers (*gasp*!). Submit it anyway to us!

Abstracts are required for paper, tutorial and work in progress
presentations. Abstracts should be up to 400 words and be submitted
to the Paper Review Committee at the address lca-cfp@conf.linux.org.au.
Abstracts should contain meta information of:

• Author’s full name (and preferred handle, if any)
• Author’s complete email address
• Author’s affilication with commerical or relavent
  organisations
• Author’s postal address
• Author’s telephone and fax numbers, with area and country
  codes.
• Author’s short biography, in around 1 – 3 paragraphs.
• Author’s favourite technical book/reference
• Author’s favourite shell, text editor, and Linux
  Distribution
• Whether travel and accommodation assistance will be required –
  if so, please list the closest international air terminal.

Abstracts and bios should be submitted as plain text.

The final paper should be submitted in one of the following
electronic formats:

• PDF (A4 paper size)
• PostScript (A4 paper size)

We encourage you to submit the the ‘source’ for the paper as
well (eg. HTML, LaTeX, DocBook, MagicPoint, etc).

Any featured software in papers must be available under a
licence compatible with the Open Source Definition
(http://www.opensource.org/osd.html). Any papers that are
accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms will be rejected. All
successful papers must be eligible for republication on-line and on
distribution media given to conference attendees. You retain
copyright to your paper. You may be asked to sign an agreement to
this upon arrival at the conference.

Birds of a Feather (BOFs) and Panel discussions will be
organised closer to the date of the conference. If you are
interested in running either please send an expression of interest
to lca-cfp@conf.linux.org.au.

We are also interested in any sub-groups of the Open Source/Free
Software community who would like to leverage the travel and venue
arrangements for their own “mini” conferences, as was done in
Brisbane in 2002. Please email lca-cfp@conf.linux.org.au
with your details, and include the estimated number of people you
think would attend. It would be up to you to organise this: any of
these events are completely independent to LCA 2003.

Dates to Remember

• Abstracts Due: 15th July 2002
• Acceptence Notification by Review Committee: September
  2002
• Final Complete Submissions Due: December 15
  2002. Remember, Santa knows if you haven’t got it in on
  time!

Travel and Accomodation Assistance

Some financial assistance is available for speakers’ travel and
accommodation in cases of need. Please indicate in your abstract
submission(s) if this is the case.

If your CFP submission doesn’t clearly state that you
require assistance, the panel will assume that you do not require
any.
