“Furthering China’s attempts to build an indigenous software
industry, The Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of
Sciences (ISCAS) has unveiled Chinese Penguin64 at the Great Hall
of the People in Beijing.”
“The Institute developed Chinese Penguin64 in collaboration with
Singapore-based Donovan Systems. “The development of 64-bit Chinese
Linux is a significant boost for Chinese software developers and
organizations with high-capacity needs,” said Gary Foong, Donovan’s
CEO. “It will give even more impetus to the rapidly growing market
for Linux in China.” In addition to technical assistance, Donovan
also shouldered some of the financial burden of development
cost.”
“Donovan designs and manufactures Linux servers powered by Sun
Microsystems’ UltraSPARC (Scalable Performance Architecture) 64-bit
chip. “We have partnered with Donovan Systems to develop 64-bit
Chinese Linux because it [the system] offers tremendous potential
for China’s software industry and commercial enterprises,” the
Institute’s Deputy Director, Research Professor Li Mingshu said.
“Open Source Linux provides an exciting opportunity for China to
develop an indigenous software industry.”
