“SuSE Linux is a big player in the international Linux
market, and they have recently decided to realease a ppc port of
their distribution. In the following interview I speak to a couple
of the people involved in the ppc port and get some important
information reguarding it as well as their general insights into
Linux and more specifically Linux on the ppc platform.“
“Mark: What is compatibility like for the vast
catalog of applications? will things run ‘out of the box’ on SuSE
ppc, or will ppc users be plagued with the same problems as most of
the redhat derivatives, with much x86 specific code causing
compatibility problems?”
“Lenz: Well, we try hard to work around these
problems. Ideally, you won’t notice any difference in ease of use
and functionality. Except that there aren’t as much packages due to
the fact that most binary-only apps are only available on
i386.”
