“When a problem crops up and no solution is offered, one tactic
— though dangerous if your boss doesn’t like unauthorized servers
— is to go ahead and use Linux to solve it.”

“As an intellectual exercise, I asked myself, “Could we dump
Windows altogether and move straight over to Linux?” which led to
another question: “How does one introduce Linux into a
Microsoft-dominated network?”

“Regarding the first question, the answer I came up with is that
it could be done — but it wouldn’t be easy or worthwhile. The NOS
is NetWare 5 (with ZENworks 2), with Lotus Notes for e-mail, and
users need AS/400 connectivity and use various closed source
solutions for accounting, business intelligence, etc. The basic
desktop could be replaced by Linux. We could run Notes under Wine
(Windows Emulator) and use xt5250 for AS/400, and Linux can talk to
Novell.”
