“Mark Twain once said, “The news of my death is quite
premature.” Likewise, when I read Kevin Lyda’s article about why
Java is doomed to fail it seemed quite premature.”

“The title itself borders on flame-bait. Saying that something
is doomed to fail is a sure way to get attention, but something is
only doomed to fail if no one uses it. There are dozens of books
coming off the press regarding Java and the most active development
by the Apache group involves integrating Java with their server.
Java is past the hype stage, and people are doing productive and
serious work with Java. This is not doomed technology.”

Most people think of Java as a Browser technology, however
this is a shortsighted view. The browser has nothing to do with
Java’s success or failure.
Sun has recognized for at least 2
years that Java in the browser was not the realm where Java would
succeed or fail. Putting Java into a browser was a nice effect, but
Java’s real strength is in server-side programming. In this
environment you don’t have the unpredictability of the myriad of
browsers. Sun has tried to mend this problem with the Java plug-in,
but the battle isn’t over the browser.”
