osOpinion: TransMeta’s “Missing Vendors”

“I watched most of TransMeta’s presentation during the
announcement of the Crusoe processor line. I had been following the
speculation about TransMeta for several months before the
announcement. (Mostly based on information in the patent
filings.)”

“Several things about the press coverage of this event disturbed
me. During the presentation it was mentioned several times that
prototype machines were being demonstrated nearby and were
available for those in attendance to inspect. Based on the
“webcast” of the event it was difficult for me to evaluate the
performance of the machines. However; running “Quake” is generally
considered one of the more demanding applications that you can run
on a PC. In spite of this several articles speculated on whether or
not TransMeta would be able to deliver adequate performance once
products based on the CPU (and code morphing technology) started
shipping. Considering the fact that prototype systems generally
perform worse than the shipping production models I can’t help but
wonder if the computer “journalists” are intentionally downplaying
the significance of what was demonstrated.

“There have been various articles stating variations of the
“fact” that the lack of system vendors present at the announcement
undermined the presentation. I am not bothered by “missing
TransMeta vendors” at all. Here are several reasons why….”
