“First of all, I say that if Win2000 is indeed a good, stable,
reliable product, then Linux has already done a lot. Linux, being
driven by sheer love of programming, doesn’t need MS competition to
get better, though it does speed up things. MS, on the other hand,
can sleep on its dollars so soundly that nothing will ever be
improved. Only the Linux encroachment forced it to improve Windows
NT. Without a competitor like Linux, that huge bean-bag of a
software giant wouldn’t budge an inch.”
“Why do Linux fans want Win2000 to be a failure? After all,
the consumer has the right to enjoy good products, whether from
Microsoft or not. The answer, of course, is that if Win2000 is
so improved as to kill its competition, then MS will be lulled into
complacency again….”
“As well as security holes, MS has other flaws in its flagship.
The price, for example. As Sirdar Yegulalp of Winmag.com says, if
Microsoft keeps the prices of the various Win2000 products too
high, people may go out for Linux instead. The “whole-hog” nature
of MS networking – switch to Active Directory on a complete Win2K
network – is also scary to IT managers. Linux makes no such fervent
demands.”
