“This week’s Linux World promises to be a blockbuster. … One
potential reason for that blockbuster anticipation is Trillian, a
project supported by heavy hitters such as Intel (Nasdaq: INTC),
IBM (NYSE: IBM), and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HWP). Trillian is
scheduled to make an announcement Wednesday at Linux World…”

“By making the shift to 64 bits, the Linux operating system (OS)
will be able to exploit the world’s most popular processor to
compete at the high-end with Sun and other non-Intel server makers.
The hope is that in porting Linux to Itanium, the OS will be able
to go even deeper into the enterprise market, where it already is
gaining steam.”

“If Microsoft’s Windows 2000 initiative — the latest
version of its corporate NT operating system — doesn’t captivate
corporate users, Intel will be able to push Linux as an
alternative.
Intel has been very supportive of the Linux
movement, with investments in Red Hat (Nasdaq: RHAT), Turbolinux,
SuSE, and VA Linux Systems.”
