“Perhaps best known for authoring the Open Source Definition,
Bruce Perens has long been one of open source’s most steadfast and
articulate advocates. Co-founder of the Open Source Initiative,
Perens is also the force behind technocrat.net, a site devoted to
putting technology and public policy on the same page. Now, as
president of Linux Capital Group, he’s embarked on a journey into
the brave new world of venture financing. In an exclusive
interview at the Sendmail offices, Perens held forth on the VC
world, the future of Linux, the trouble with patents, and why it’s
time for the technical to get political.”
“What’s it like to make the transition to the world of venture
funding? That is, if it feels like a transition.”
“Oh, it is. It’s learning something new. It doesn’t mean I’m
leaving any community that I’m already in, but I am entering some
new ones that I don’t know a thing about. It’s somewhat
intimidating to be a newby again, and that’s exactly what’s
happening as far as finance is concerned. It’s fortunate that I
have two very good finance people in my company – but at the same
time, I’m the president and I’ve got to learn it. It’s a very
interesting voyage.”
