SEUL.org: Linux in education report #5

Thomas Tempé has just started work on Pangée,
a universal language-learning engine.
Here are his words
lightly edited from the announcement:”

“Users will be able to feed it courses in any language, to learn
any other language, and it will store them and hand them out as
needed. It will be built as an exchange platform, meaning that it
allows for easy contribution from anyone of small pieces of
resources: here an exercise, here a cultural note, here a
translation into yet another language of a grammar point….”

“Finally, I’d like to mention Red Escolar, the Mexican (School
Net) Project. Many of you will remember Arturo Espinosa Aldama’s
original announcement from October 27, 1998 of, “a program that
aims to bring computers and the net to every elementary and
mid-level school in Mexico.” The project has advanced significantly
since then and is moving into Phase 2 of their deployment plan.
They estimate a savings of approximately $120,000,000 by using
Linux rather than Microsoft products….”
