“The effort to create a new Linux gradebook application that was
being spearheaded by Mike Eschman of Engima Technologies has
foundered. Mike’s last message on the subject was:

“After evaulating responses on the gradebook discussion, I have
determined the gradebook effort to be a poor use of resources at
ETC; therefore, we are withdrawing from the gradebook effort.

“This is unfortunate, but we think it shows an area of concern
in promoting open source/free software to non-technical groups. The
Linux community isn’t divided into providers and consumers. If you
want something to happen, you’ve got to speak up and get involved.
Sitting and waiting for others to carry the load just ensures that
the load doesn’t get carried. This ethic needs to be fostered in
our target communities, lest they just sit quietly and wait for us
to present them with what they want. Lack of feedback and guidance
from the educational community was the reason for Mike’s tabling
this effort…”
