“VA Linux, made famous when its share price jumped a record 764
percent in its first day of trading, is launching a European
operation offering custom-built hardware based on Linux.”

“VA Linux was founded in 1993 by current chief executive Larry
Augustin, after he used the first release of the free Linux
operating system to build himself a fast low-cost Intel-based
server. A Web posting offering the same service to others led to a
flotation last November. More recently, the company led the project
to port Linux to Intel’s forthcoming Itanium microprocessor,
guiding more experienced vendors such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard and
Intel….”

VA Linux systems are based on whichever Linux distributions
customers want, Augustin said. He admitted that while VA Linux
solutions usually have a Red Hat look and feel, which is most
popular in the US, they may incorporate features from other
distributions. In Germany, where SuSE Linux is most popular, he
expects to supply systems based on that.
