“The Linux World Expo, here, is generating a legion of
announcements sure to raise the stature of the free operating
system. It may also server to raise the stock prices of the public
companies that plan to profit from it, as well as the hopes of the
private companies with IPOs in the offing.
But more significant than who’s-releasing-what may be the
size of the exhibits, the crowds and the expectations of the tens
of thousands likely to attend before the week is out. With
about 100 exhibits, the show at the Jacob Javitts Convention
Center–the third in a little more than a year, and the first on
the East Coast–has doubled in size from the previous one which
was, in turn, about double the size of the one before that.
With its own double-digit growth, Linux may indeed one day rival
other OS giants like Microsoft and Novell that have had their day
in corporate America. While show attendance might be considered
somewhat small by trade show standards, its growth has wowed Linux
loyalists who have attended previous shows. What’s more, the crowd
is not what it once was. Linux is becoming–well,
mature.”
