"There are other operating systems, each with its own niche. Two of them, Linux and - to a lesser extent - BeOS, have received plenty of publicity recently but do they offer a serious alternative, for the individual or for businesses?

"The evidence suggests Microsoft does not need to be too worried. Some customers are willing to try an alternative operating system, which in certain cases might work better, or save them money, but none has the universal appeal of Windows."
