"IBM Corp. this week will demonstrate a 'prototype' version of
Linux that runs on its mainframe System 390.
An IBM executive said, however, the company is not yet
supporting Linux on the S/390. Rather, the company will continue to
make Linux available free for users who want to download the
software from its developer Web site."
IBM will demonstrate the technology at the LinuxWorld conference
later this week... Linux for S/390 can be integrated on the
mainframe system and run on a logical partition... a deployment
of 14,000 PCs -- such as America Online Inc. has -- could
eventually be replaced with a single System 390 for Web hosting if
the mainframe had a Linux partition."
