"Embedded Linux leader Lineo Inc. says it hopes to plug itself into the entire spectrum of embedded computing with a soon-to-be completed acquisition. Lineo, Salt Lake City, Utah, is buying Embedded Power Corp., Houston, Texas."
"Embedded Power specializes in embedded system development products aimed at helping developers create programs for incorporation into larger systems. Headed by Tom Barrett, chief executive officer and co-founder, the company produces a range of products in areas not addressed by Lineo, which focuses on embedded real-time and high availability solutions on the Linux platform."
"Besides expanding its strength in real-time computing, the acquisition strengthens Lineo in two major ways. As a part of the deal, Lineo gains access to the RTXC real-time operating system. RTXC will allow Lineo to address the 8 and 16 bit microprocessor field, an area currently not covered by the Linux operating system. Embedded Power's RTXC-DSP operating system gives Lineo an entry to the digital signal processor market, allowing it to be a one-stop shop for manufacturers who want to combine microprocessors with DSPs."
