The Ottawa Sun looks a little more closely at Mitel's e-smith acquisition:

"Mitel was looking for stable, user-friendly network server software and e-smith had just that. Laver said Mitel aims to replace the Private Branch Exchange (PBX) software that made the company famous with a Linux-based Internet protocol version that will handle voice, video and data communications -- a sort of "telephone network server," much like the network servers that handle most firms' computers.

The new merger will allow the company to go even further in research and development, Laver said, because while other companies are slashing, Matthews has increased research and development spending by 50 per cent.

"It's no secret, this is not a happy time in the technology sector. Being part of the Mitel family is great for e-smith."
